103: More mysteries of the Atacama

Written and published by Linden Alexander Pentecost, published on the 19th of May 2026. This article was published in the UK and I the author live in the UK, no AI was used. This article is unrelated to and separate from any and all of my other publications. This article contains 814 words. Note that this article begins with information about a mystical experience which is very relevant to these topics, before discussing more tangible and known aspects of the Atacama's mysteries.

Some years ago I had a strange vivid dream, one of many in which I have visited South America or interacted with its indigenous cultures and ancestors in some way. In this dream, I saw a landscape of deserts and beautiful rock formations, one of them in particular had the appearance of a sort of giant thumb. In my dream I remember seeing these rock formations from a road, zooming in and out of them. And then I distinctly saw this thumb-like rock formation collapse in slow motion, breaking apart and falling with dust.

My perception was akin to typical third eye perception, wherein I didn't experience the landscape through physical eyes and body, the light and atmosphere was “darker”, the movement of light rays, slower, and I did not walk, my perception moved from place to place and became more detailed depending on my focus, yet most of the time whilst I experience these things, the experiences seem guided, like I am being shown something.

I later learned that the place I had visited, in my mind, was La Valle de la Luna in the Atacama Desert in Northern Chile, not far from San Pedro de Atacama. I don't really understand why I was shown this vision. The thumb-shaped rock formation in this area has not collapsed or fallen down, for one, so why I would see it collapsing I am not sure. The rock formation was very imposing, in the dream it seemed far larger than it is in real life, but it definitely is the same rock formation, the same distinctive shape.

The Atacama has some very interesting features, history and ancient languages which I have discussed elsewhere. Furthermore, not far from La Valle de La Luna there is a an archaeological site, known as La Pucara de Quitor. This is a kind of pre-Inca fortified settlement using drystone walled construction, but none of the construction to my knowledge is megalithic. The people who lived here would likely have spoken the Kunza language, which I have discussed elsewhere, but I am nevertheless not entirely sure if Kunza would have been the language at La Pucara de Quitor, simply because this ancient settlement does seem a little different from other Kunza sites.

There are some other really interesting things about the history of this area which I have not talked about elsewhere. One of which is the presence of two cryptid beings in this area, even if I do not like the word cryptid. First of all there is El Alicanto, a being said to be a majestic flightless bird that feeds upon the ore deposits of the Atacama Desert, its metal feathers are coloured according to the minerals in has been eating. So if it has eaten gold for example its feathers will be of gold. This being is known to lead selfish and evil people to their deaths, but if respected and followed discretely it is believed to lead people to sources of minerals, when the person is humble and not the kind of person to actually destroy the environment.

The other cryptid being known in this area is, a little more odd. Some describe it as looking kind of like a kangaroo, but in essence it is essentially described as being like a velociraptor, seen running through the Atacama occasionally. This is known in cryptid circles as the “Arica Monster”. According to some sources, this being has a language that consists of clicking and chirping sounds, that it uses to communicate with other beings of this type. Legends of this being may go back some hundreds of years. Given what I have written elsewhere about the Atacama and its mysterious geological history, the presence of these cryptids only adds to the ancient mysteriousness of this landscape, which, whilst in a sense looking like another planet, is in some ways little more understood than other planets are.

I hope that this article has been an interesting read. It is dedicated to the ancient people of Atacama, to El Alicanto and to the Arica Monsters. In strange Desert landscapes, with their own supernatural music and thousands of years of unknown history, I imagine that beings like the Arica monster could exist and enter into our reality. It is also noteworthy that dinosaurs survived in parts of South America longer than they did elsewhere.
